Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cups unsweetened cocoa powder Dutch-processed cocoa for richer flavor recommended.
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs Room temperature recommended.
  • 1 cup whole milk Substitute with almond milk for a vegan version.
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil Can substitute with melted coconut oil or unsalted butter.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water Hot water enhances cocoa flavor.

Frosting and Decoration

  • to taste Buttercream frosting For assembly and covering.
  • to taste Chocolate ganache For drizzling on top.
  • to taste Green fondant For leaves decoration.
  • to taste Chocolate shavings For bark texture.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together.
  • Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients, and mix until well combined.
  • Stir in the boiling water until smooth.
  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

Assembly

  • Once cooled, level the cakes and stack them using buttercream frosting.
  • Cover the entire cake in buttercream and create bark texture using a spatula.
  • Drizzle chocolate ganache on top and decorate with green fondant leaves and chocolate shavings.

Serving

  • Serve and enjoy your forest-themed cake!

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to 4-5 days in the fridge. Can freeze for up to 3 months.
