Ingredients
  

For the Crust

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour Substitutable with whole wheat flour or gluten-free blend.
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, chilled and diced Keep cold for a flaky crust.
  • 0.25 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons cold water Add gradually to form dough.

For the Filling

  • 1 cup maple syrup Pure maple syrup recommended for best flavor.
  • 0.5 cups brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.25 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 cups chopped pecans or walnuts Optional.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Make the crust: In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in chilled butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water until the dough forms a ball.
  • Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out circles to fit your muffin tin.
  • Prepare the filling: In another bowl, whisk together maple syrup, brown sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.

Baking

  • Fill the tart shells with the mixture, about 3/4 full. Top with nuts if desired.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until the filling is set and the crust is golden brown.
  • Cool in the muffin tin for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

Keep ingredients cold for a flaky crust. Optional to add nuts or spices for variations.
