Ingredients
  

Doughnut Base

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Foundation of your doughnuts; whole wheat option available.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons) Essential for rise; can substitute with baking powder.
  • 1/2 cup milk, warmed Warm, not hot, to activate yeast.
  • 2 large eggs Adds richness and aids in rising.
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted Can be replaced with coconut oil or margarine.

Fillings and Toppings

  • as needed creamy custard or fruit jam For filling.
  • as needed powdered sugar For dusting.
  • as needed vegetable oil For frying.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Combine warm milk and yeast in a bowl; let sit for 5 minutes to activate.
  • In another bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt to evenly distribute dry ingredients.
  • Add the activated yeast mixture, eggs, and melted butter to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough until smooth and let rise covered for about 1 hour until it doubles in size.
  • Roll out dough and cut into circles; let them rise again for 30 minutes.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a pot and fry the doughnuts until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
  • Remove the fried doughnuts and allow to cool slightly, then fill with custard or jam.
  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Store doughnuts in an airtight container for up to 2 days in the refrigerator. They can also be frozen for longer storage. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes for best texture.
