  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Substitute some with whole wheat flour for added nutrition.
  • 1 packet instant yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons) Use fresh yeast for the best rise.
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water About 110°F or 43°C, helps activate the yeast.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Can be substituted with melted butter or another neutral oil.

Preparation

  • Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, mix together the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar.
  • Add wet ingredients: Slowly stir in the warm water and olive oil until a cohesive dough forms.
  • Knead the dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough thoroughly for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  • First rise: Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  • Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking.
  • Shape the rolls: Once risen, punch down the dough gently to release air. Divide it into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a roll. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Second rise: Cover the rolls and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake the rolls: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  • Cool before serving: Let the rolls cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and filling them with your favorite ingredients.

Notes

For added flavor, you can toast the rolls before adding fillings and sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds on the rolls before baking for a decorative touch.
