Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Key for rich flavor; margarine can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar Can substitute some brown sugar for extra moisture.
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Add an extra teaspoon if almond extract is unavailable.
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 3-4 tablespoons colored sugar or sprinkles For decoration.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until smooth.
  • Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until fully incorporated.
  • Gradually blend the dry mixture into the wet mixture, being careful not to over-mix.
  • Scoop tablespoon-sized amounts of dough, roll into balls, and place on ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Gently press the tops of the cookie balls and sprinkle colored sugar or sprinkles on top.

Baking

  • Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until golden around the edges.
  • Remove from the oven, let cool on the sheet for a few minutes, then transfer to cooling racks.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week. For freezing, place baked cookies in a single layer and wrap tightly.
