Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour You can substitute half with whole wheat flour for a heartier bread.
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast You can use active dry yeast if needed, but proof it first.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups warm water Water should be about 110°F for optimal yeast activation.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Optional, enhances browning and flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar (if using). Stir until well mixed.
  • Gradually add the warm water to the flour mixture, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Cover the bowl with a clean cloth or plastic wrap and let it sit at room temperature for about 1-2 hours or until the dough has doubled in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • Gentle punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf. Place in a greased baking pan, seam side down.
  • Cover the shaped loaf and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

To store, wrap the bread in plastic wrap or aluminum foil; it lasts 3-5 days in the refrigerator or up to three months in the freezer.
