Ingredients

  • 6 cups sliced apples (about 6 medium-sized apples) Firm varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn are recommended.
  • 1 cup sugar Combination of white and brown sugar suggested.
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Use fresh spices for better flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg Use fresh nutmeg if possible.
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch Helps to thicken the filling.
  • 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade) Let store-bought crust sit at room temperature before use.

For the crumb topping

  • 1 cup oats Use certified gluten-free oats for a gluten-free version.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup butter (melted) Use cold butter for a chunkier topping.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large bowl, mix sliced apples with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch.
  • Let the apple mixture sit for about 10 minutes to enhance flavors.
  • Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust.
  • In another bowl, combine oats, brown sugar, flour, and melted butter; mix until crumbly.
  • Sprinkle the oat mixture over the apples.

Baking

  • Bake for 45-50 minutes until the apples are tender and the top is golden brown.
  • Let cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for added indulgence. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
