Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu Extra-firm tofu can be used for more crunch.
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs If unavailable, regular bread crumbs can be used.
  • 1/2 cup sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce Substitute with tamari or liquid aminos for gluten-free.
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon ginger powder
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • to taste salt
  • as needed oil for frying Alternatively, bake at 400°F.
  • dipping sauces (optional) Serve with sweet chili sauce or soy sauce.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) if baking, or heat oil in a frying pan until hot but not smoking.
  • Press the tofu by wrapping it in a clean towel with a weight on top for 15 minutes to remove excess moisture, then cut into bite-sized cubes.
  • In a bowl, mix soy sauce, garlic powder, ginger powder, and cornstarch. Coat the tofu cubes gently in this mixture.
  • In another bowl, combine panko bread crumbs, sesame seeds, and salt. Dip each marinated tofu cube into this mixture, pressing to ensure it’s fully covered.

Cooking

  • If baking, place the coated tofu bites on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through. If frying, place the tofu cubes in hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy.

Serving

  • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces and garnish with sliced green onions or sesame seeds.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. For freezing, freeze uncoated tofu bites before frying, then thaw in the refrigerator overnight before cooking. Reheat in oven for best crunch.
