Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour Can substitute with whole wheat flour for a nuttier flavor.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened Use softened for easy mixing; can substitute with vegan margarine.
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened Can substitute with Greek yogurt for a lighter option.
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Filling Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon zest

Optional Topping

  • 1/4 cup streusel topping Optional for added crunch.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, softened unsalted butter, softened cream cheese, sugar, egg, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until a soft, slightly tacky dough forms.
  • Lightly flour your work surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into rounds, about 3 inches in diameter.
  • In another bowl, mix powdered sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest until smooth to create the filling.

Assembly

  • Place a small amount of the cream cheese filling in the center of each dough round. Fold the dough over and pinch the edges to seal.
  • Arrange the filled kolaches on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Optionally, sprinkle with streusel topping.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Let the kolaches cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Enjoy kolaches warm or at room temperature, and consider pairing them with coffee or fresh berries.
