  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour Can be replaced with gluten-free flour blend
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Can use salted butter, reduce added salt
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg Can use a flax egg for vegan option
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract Can be omitted or replaced with additional vanilla extract
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons milk
  • Icing for decoration Use colorful icing, sprinkles, or edible glitter

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
  • Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  • Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass coated with sugar.

Baking

  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let them cool on wire racks.

Decoration

  • Once cooled, decorate with icing as desired.

Notes

To store, keep cookies in an airtight container for up to one week or freeze for longer storage. For best results, reheat in the oven to restore texture.
