For the Broth

  • 8 cups beef broth Opt for low-sodium for richer flavor.
  • 1 pound beef sirloin, thinly sliced Slice thinly to ensure quick cooking.
  • 1 package rice noodles Essential for the pho experience.
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 3-4 pieces star anise For aromatic flavor.
  • 1 stick cinnamon Enhances the broth's warmth.
  • 2-3 pieces cloves
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, sliced Provides a zing.

Toppings

  • fresh basil leaves Key ingredient for added flavor.
  • bean sprouts
  • lime wedges For squeezing over the pho.
  • sliced jalapeños Add spice to your bowl.
  • soy sauce For serving.
  • hoisin sauce For serving.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large pot, bring the beef broth to a rolling boil.
  • Add the slices of onion, star anise, cinnamon stick, cloves, and sliced ginger into the pot.
  • Reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld together.
  • Meanwhile, cook the rice noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking process.
  • Remove the spices from the broth using a fine sieve or strainer. Return the pot to heat and add the thinly sliced beef.
  • To serve, place a portion of noodles in each bowl, ladle the hot broth and beef over the noodles, and top with fresh basil leaves, bean sprouts, lime wedges, and jalapeños.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add Sriracha or chili oil. When storing leftovers, keep broth and noodles separate to maintain texture.
